Carlos Sainz Sr could run against FIA boss Ben Sulayem in December’s election, sparking major leadership shake-up in global motorsport.
A new name is gaining momentum in motorsport circles as a potential rival to FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem, and it’s a familiar one: Carlos Sainz Sr.
Contrary to earlier speculation, it won’t be Susie Wolff stepping up to challenge Ben Sulayem in the upcoming FIA presidential elections later this year. Instead, reports from several reputable sources, including Sky Sports, point to rally legend Carlos Sainz Sr as a serious contender.
The two-time World Rally Champion, who still competes in rally raids, is said to be considering a run for the top job at the FIA. Backed by significant support from both the Formula 1 and WRC communities, Sainz is seen as a credible alternative to Ben Sulayem, whose leadership style has come under increasing scrutiny.
Throughout his tenure, Ben Sulayem has drawn criticism for what some describe as an autocratic approach, marked by the ousting of several key figures within the organization. The latest high-profile departure came just last month when FIA Deputy President for Sport Robert Reid resigned, citing concerns over governance under Ben Sulayem’s leadership.
Despite his son, Carlos Sainz Jr., currently racing for Williams in F1, insiders say there are no major concerns about potential conflicts of interest. Sources suggest that Sainz Sr would be able to delegate matters involving F1 governance to avoid any overlap with his son’s career.
One senior team figure told Sky Sports that Sainz Sr’s “impeccable reputation for integrity” makes him a highly credible candidate, adding that he should be “taken very seriously.”
If elected, Sainz Sr reportedly intends to foster better collaboration with drivers and strengthen the influence of the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association (GPDA) in shaping F1 regulations.
The FIA presidential election is scheduled to take place at the organization’s General Assembly in Uzbekistan on December 12.
