Post-Chinese Grand Prix Analysis: Key Statistics Unveiled

24/04/2024

Following the Chinese Grand Prix, a detailed analysis of the key statistics has been conducted, revealing both ongoing trends and significant records broken during this latest chapter of the Formula 1 season.

As after every Grand Prix, it’s time to discover the most notable statistics, the records that have been broken, the remarkable streaks still ongoing or those that have abruptly ended last weekend…

Qualifying

Verstappen clinched Red Bull’s 100th pole at Shanghai… on the same circuit where the Austrian team had secured its first pole.

The Red Bull driver is the first driver of this century to achieve 5 poles in the first 5 Grand Prix of the year. Mika Hakkinen had accomplished the same feat in 1999.

Verstappen has now taken pole on 21 different circuits: he surpasses Ayrton Senna and Nigel Mansell and becomes fourth on the all-time list.

Red Bull secured the front row for the second consecutive time. This is their 5th qualifying double in the hybrid era. Yet Pérez only made it into Q2 by 48 thousandths!

Alonso achieved his best qualifications in China since 2013.

For the past 3 qualifications, Lando Norris has outqualified Oscar Piastri at McLaren F1. Piastri has started from the third row for 4 Grand Prix now.

Charles Leclerc has only started from the “even” side of the grid this year.

Valtteri Bottas made it into Q3 for the first time this year. For Nico Hülkenberg, it’s already his 2nd.

Daniel Ricciardo has outqualified Yuki Tsunoda for the first time this year (also in sprint qualifications).

Ocon has beaten Gasly five times this year in qualifications. Gasly still achieved his first Q2 of the year (for the first time, the Alpines were not eliminated in Q1).

Alexander Albon has never been eliminated in Q1 this year, but has also never reached Q3.

On the other hand, Guanyu Zhou and Logan Sargeant have always been eliminated in Q1 in 2024.

Lewis Hamilton experienced his first elimination in Q1 since Saudi Arabia 2022.

The race

Post-Chinese Grand Prix Analysis Key Statistics Unveiled

Max Verstappen has won his 21st victory in the last 23 Grand Prix.

Verstappen, who had never triumphed in Shanghai, has now won on 26 different circuits. Lewis Hamilton has won on 31 different tracks.

For the third consecutive time, Verstappen has won both the sprint and the Grand Prix on the same weekend.

Thanks to Lando Norris finishing 2nd, this is the first time this season that a constructor has not achieved a double at a Grand Prix this year.

It was the 15th podium of Norris’s career without a win. He thus equals Patrick Depailler, Jean Alesi, Mika Hakkinen, and Eddie Irvine, who all stood on the podium 15 times before their first victory (but all of them have won).

It was also the eighth second-place finish of his F1 career, seven of which have been in the last 18 Grand Prix.

This 2nd place was McLaren’s best performance at Shanghai since Jenson Button also finished second in 2012.

Both McLarens have scored in every Grand Prix and every Sprint this year.

Sergio Pérez has been on the podium four times in the first five Grand Prix of the year (he only had two podiums in the last ten Grand Prix last year).

Charles Leclerc finished 4th for Ferrari and is the only driver to have finished in the top four in every race in 2024.

It was the 14th consecutive weekend that Leclerc has scored points, including the sprints.

Carlos Sainz finished 5th: it’s the first time he has not been on the podium when he starts a Grand Prix this year.

Mercedes has not finished in the top four in the first five races for the first time since 2011.

The German team had never finished outside the top 5 in China before.

Fernando Alonso finished lower than he started on the grid for the fourth time in five Grand Prix this year.

For Lewis Hamilton, this marks the third time he has finished ninth in the last four Grand Prix.

With a 10th place for Haas, Nico Hulkenberg has scored points in three of the last four Grand Prix (he had only scored in one Grand Prix throughout the entire 2023 season).

Hulkenberg is now tied with Andrea de Cesaris with 208 starts in F1 without a win.

Esteban Ocon, finishing 11th, achieved Alpine’s best result of the year…
