Piastri Confident in F1 Victory Despite Red Bull Threat

Red Bull Tough, But McLaren Eyes Win: Piastri

05/07/2024

Oscar Piastri remains optimistic about McLaren’s chances to win in Britain, acknowledging Red Bull’s dominance but highlighting McLaren’s recent competitive performance and readiness to seize any opportunity.

Oscar Piastri is convinced he now has a chance to win in Formula 1. The McLaren F1 driver aims for his first success in the premier category and believes his team is a natural contender for this goal.

“I think I am definitely in the race for victory. We have had a very competitive car over the last three months. And, you know, there have been many, let’s say, misses and opportunities. I don’t think there has been a clear-cut occasion where we could have easily won,” Piastri said.

“But we have been fighting for a long time. So I don’t think it really changes our mindset. I think we have given ourselves enough proof on enough different tracks to say we are back and capable of fighting for wins. And, yes, as far as I’m concerned, I want to fight for that.”

Oscar Piastri fears, however, that Max Verstappen and Red Bull are the favorites this weekend: “I think Red Bull will be strong. They were very fast in high-speed corners in Barcelona, very fast in high-speed corners in Austria.”

“And practically this whole circuit is made up of high-speed corners. So I think they will be very difficult to beat. But it’s also one of our strengths in the past. There are also low-speed corners, which have been one of our strengths in the last races.”

“So I think there will be a good fight at the front. But yes, given their speed in high-speed corners last week compared to everyone else, not just us, I think they will be very difficult to beat.”

McLaren still scored more points than Red Bull in Austria, and Piastri thinks Sergio Pérez’s difficulties are an advantage for him and Lando Norris: “It certainly helps us for our goal in the constructors’ championship.”

“I mean, there was just Max, really, and when you have two cars at the front against just one, it opens up opportunities and it’s always good for scoring points. So yes, I think it’s always a good thing.”
