Official: FIA Suspends Derek Warwick After Verstappen Remarks

The FIA suspends Derek Warwick from Canada GP duties after controversial comments on Verstappen’s penalty sparked concern over steward impartiality.

The FIA announced on Friday evening that Derek Warwick has been suspended from his duties as a race steward for the Canadian Grand Prix. The decision was explained in an official statement from the federation.

“Following recent unauthorized comments made to the media, the FIA has decided to suspend Derek Warwick from his role as driver steward for this weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix. He will be replaced by Enrique Bernoldi, who will carry out stewarding duties from the Remote Operations Centre in Geneva until the end of the event,” the FIA stated.

Warwick commented on the penalty given to Max Verstappen in Spain, which led to disciplinary action due to the nature of his remarks. According to the FIA, Warwick admitted he should not have made those comments, and the suspension is temporary.

“Following discussions, Derek acknowledged that his comments were inappropriate in the context of his role as an FIA steward and has apologized. He will resume his stewarding duties at the next Grand Prix in Austria.”
