Miami GP: Tough Day for Williams as Albon and Sargeant Struggle

08/05/2024

At the Miami GP, Williams F1 faced setbacks with Albon finishing last and Sargeant retiring early.

Williams F1 had a very challenging weekend in Miami, culminating in a disappointing result with Alex Albon finishing 18th (19th on track before Kevin Magnussen’s penalty) and Logan Sargeant crashing. Sven Smeets, the team’s sporting director, admits it was a big letdown.

“It was a really difficult Sunday for everyone in the team and our drivers. We started the race well with both cars close to each other. We stopped both cars early to be aggressive as we knew the fight was going to be very tight,” Smeets said.

“In one of those battles, Logan was taken out by Magnussen. Although it’s very frustrating, we are relieved that Logan is perfectly fine and was quickly released from the medical center.”

“The crash triggered a safety car which came at a bad time for Alex’s race. Alex did an excellent job trying to defend with older tires, but it was impossible to maintain his position as he sustained floor damage in the fight. This led to him going off the track a few laps before the end of the race.”

The team is working on new parts and hopes to benefit from them: “A day to quickly forget, but we are looking forward to Imola where we should bring some performance to the car with new parts.”
