Amidst concerns at Ferrari, Laurent Mekies’ switch to AlphaTauri could lead to significant staff departures. Mekies, formerly at Toro Rosso, now seeks to rebuild at Faenza with some familiar faces.
At Ferrari, there’s concern that Laurent Mekies’ departure may now trigger a staff exodus to AlphaTauri, another Italy-based team.
Mekies, who previously worked with Red Bull’s second Formula 1 team under the name Toro Rosso, has returned to Faenza, this time to replace his former boss, Franz Tost.
The 46-year-old Frenchman climbed the ranks at Maranello to become deputy team director and sporting director, positioning him ideally to take some well-aligned personnel from Ferrari with him.
One of his notable recruits could be Marco Matassa, former head of Ferrari’s youth academy, now temporarily under Jock Clear’s management.
Ferrari team principal Frédéric Vasseur downplays these departures.
“Eighty people will join, half to replace those leaving, half to strengthen Scuderia.”
However, the Frenchman remains tight-lipped about the identities of the new Ferrari arrivals – like Loïc Serra from Mercedes, who isn’t expected to end his gardening leave until the end of this year.
“I won’t name names,” Vasseur insists. “I don’t like to give names.”
