McLaren F1, under Stella’s guidance, targets high-speed improvements to surpass Red Bull in the racing league.
McLaren F1’s team principal, Andrea Stella, has pinpointed high-speed corners as the key area where the team now needs to improve in their Formula 1 battle with Red Bull.
The Woking-based team has emerged as Red Bull’s closest challenger this season since Miami. However, McLaren has struggled to build on this breakthrough in subsequent races, with minor details leading to Norris’s failure against Max Verstappen in Canada and Spain.
Stella acknowledged that the updates in Miami “exceeded expectations” in terms of low-speed performance improvements, to the point that it’s no longer a weakness. However, he denies that this has compromised the MCL38’s high-speed performance.
“I would say that certain sections don’t necessarily match the characteristics we currently have. Others will adapt better. Look at the second sector. We were very competitive throughout the weekend in Barcelona.”
“And this again attests to the progress we’ve made in medium and low-speed corners.”
“As we discussed in previous races, which were mainly dominated by low-speed turns, we now have work to do at high speeds.”
“The fact that we have been able to alter the car’s personality—it’s now a car that performs well in a speed range that was our weakness 12 months ago—but with this generation of cars, you gain some places, you lose a bit elsewhere. And you just need to continue your development and ensure everything follows. But it’s not as if we have worsened our high-speed performance.”
“It’s more like we haven’t improved it as much as other areas. And others have. But at Red Bull, they are certainly very good at high and very high speeds.”
