Verstappen’s test drive in a 2022 F1 car at Imola has sparked controversy, drawing criticism from Ferrari’s director.
Just before the Spanish Grand Prix, a private testing day was held at Imola by Red Bull Racing with Max Verstappen behind the wheel.
In accordance with regulations, Verstappen drove an RB18 from two years ago – but one that conformed to the new 2022 aerodynamic regulations with ground effects.
This move irritated Fred Vasseur, the director of Ferrari, who saw it as a potential for development, although such tests are typically meant for young drivers.
When asked about this irritation, Verstappen smiled today in Austria and made ironic remarks!
“We did some testing with the 2022 car, which is of course allowed this year, and I just wanted to get my bearings back since it’s been a while since I’ve driven this 2024 car and I hadn’t driven the 2022.”
“And Imola is also a fun track. We had a good day.”
“It was nice and warm too, and it refreshed my memory of how this car behaved compared to that one.”
The Dutchman carefully avoided the word ‘development.’
Charles Leclerc, a Ferrari driver, also had a trial with a 2022 F1 car. But the Monegasque defended what was done in his case.
“Yes, we did it too. But it was before the start of the season, when there are good opportunities to drive. Obviously, it’s a chance to try and compare with a new car coming a bit later, which is always useful, but as a driver, the goal is clearly to get back into the rhythm after the winter, before real testing. That’s what we did.”
