Jos Verstappen Hints at Max’s Possible Move to Mercedes

29/06/2024

Jos Verstappen suggests Max might join Mercedes F1, emphasizing his pivotal role in Red Bull’s performance.

The war of words at the Red Bull Ring between Jos Verstappen and Christian Horner continued following this afternoon’s Sprint qualifying.

Jos complained about Horner’s behaviour towards him, to which the Red Bull team principal retorted by mocking the elder Verstappen, suggesting that while Jos might be free for Mercedes F1, Max certainly was not.

This provoked Jos Verstappen, who did not rule out the possibility of his son moving to Mercedes for the 2025 Formula 1 season!

The altercation between Jos Verstappen and Red Bull team director Christian Horner caused quite a stir in Austria.

When asked about his son’s immediate future with Red Bull, Verstappen Sr. said, “There’s a lot going on, so I don’t want to say too much.”

With Toto Wolff expressing strong interest in signing the Dutchman, Verstappen Sr. was questioned about a potential move to the Brackley-based team for Max, to which he responded: “That’s correct.”

Verstappen’s comments came shortly after Max clinched the pole position in Austria, a feat his father applauded.

“Everyone is close and Max did a perfect lap. He was very strong. It should be a great race and I think Max was pleased.”

“Seeing the performance of the Red Bull in the other car (Perez), Max proves once again that he is the one driving this team’s performance now.”

A final jab that Red Bull and Horner will surely appreciate.

Dr Helmut Marko refrained from taking sides in the paddock.

“Speak to Jos or Christian. But I think it’s kindergarten, or a playground at best…”

As for Toto Wolff, he criticised Horner for speaking “foolishly.”

“I didn’t hear what he said at all,” he replied. When informed that the Red Bull director had suggested he sign Jos Verstappen, Wolff responded, “That’s just foolish. He’s talking nonsense and sinking deeper into his foolishness day by day. Signing Jos? That’s not too bad, but we’re targeting Max!”
