Magnussen Outclasses Hülkenberg in Melbourne Qualifiers

23/03/2024

Kevin Magnussen’s performance in Melbourne’s qualifiers saw him outclass teammate Nico Hülkenberg, highlighting Haas F1’s competitive edge.

Kevin Magnussen outperformed Nico Hülkenberg fair and square in the Melbourne qualifications, making it to Q2 while his teammate stalled in Q1. The Haas F1 driver is pleased to have given it his all and positioned the car at its level.

“There were some good laps from me in the qualifications today, without any mistakes, so I think that’s roughly where we are with the car, at least in qualifications, 14th then,” Magnussen stated.

“We’re still within reach of the top 10, and we just need to have a clean race and hope that tire degradation will be on our side tomorrow. It seemed okay during the Free Practices, the biggest question is whether our race pace is good enough. I’m hoping we can score some points.”

Hülkenberg lost time due to Sergio Pérez, who has since been penalized by the race direction: “I was slowed down during my first run by Pérez, which wasn’t ideal, then my second lap wasn’t clean.”

“The lap was looking promising until I exited turn 7 when the wind changed, and I lost a lot of time due to the different wind direction. I then lost the front tires for the rest of the lap and didn’t manage to improve enough.”

“We’re all very close in the pack, so we’ll see what happens tomorrow. But the graining we’ve seen this weekend might offer some interesting options and potential for tomorrow. I’m looking forward to it.”
