Charles Leclerc reflects on Ferrari’s F1 form and eyes consistent podiums with key upgrades ahead of the Canadian GP in Montreal.
Charles Leclerc is pleased with Ferrari’s progress in recent races, despite results that still fall short of the team’s initial goals. The Scuderia driver admits that a stroke of luck was needed to claim the podium in Spain.
“I think the triple-header was positive because we maximized the car’s potential. Now we need upgrades to be in a better position. We got lucky in Barcelona; we were in a position to take the podium, but we were fortunate, and I hope that soon we won’t need that luck anymore,” said Leclerc.
Like Hamilton (read here), he also declined to reveal the technical issues that hindered Ferrari during the race in Barcelona.
“We had to deal with it, but at least the first stint was very positive. That’s all I can say.”
The new parts should help, but the Monegasque is not putting pressure on his team: “I don’t know when the upgrades will arrive, everyone is doing their best to bring them as soon as possible. But there’s obviously a lot of work involved to get them here quickly.”
Reacting to the rumors of Fred Vasseur’s dismissal, Leclerc admits that pressure is high at Ferrari but reiterates his trust in his team principal: “It’s not an easy position to be in, but we’re lucky to be wearing red. I’m happy to be working with Fred and with Lewis.”
“It’s impressive to see how Lewis manages everything while staying completely focused on racing. He’s someone to look up to.”
“And the best we can do is to focus on what’s within our control — and that’s performance on track. We share a common goal: to return to winning ways, and we’re working hard to make it happen. Fred is part of the team, we have a good relationship, I trust Fred, and I can’t wait to be back on track so we can stop talking about all this and just drive.”
Now it’s on to Montreal!
“Montreal is a city I really love and know well now, as I’ve spent quite a bit of time there in recent years. I enjoy bringing my friends and family to the race to spend time together when I get the chance. This year, we visited Mont-Tremblant for the first time — it was fantastic and I really enjoyed it. Even Leo (his dog) was happy!”
Leclerc believes the Scuderia can perform well here.
“Ferrari could get closer to McLaren in terms of performance, because our car handles curbs well, even if, on paper, a win looks difficult — so a podium is a realistic goal.”
