Imola poised for F1 comeback if Madrid not ready

Formula 1 could bring Imola back to the race calendar in 2026 or 2027, depending on Madrid Grand Prix readiness and rotation plans.

Imola could return to the Formula 1 calendar as early as 2027, or even in 2026 if Madrid is not ready in time for its first Grand Prix.

This is the view of two influential figures: Italian Federal Sports Minister Andrea Abodi and F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali.

The Madrid street race, scheduled to debut in 2026, will come at the expense of the iconic and popular Enzo e Dino Ferrari circuit in Imola, a favourite among tifosi and drivers alike, even if races there can sometimes be dull.

When asked about his disappointment over losing Italy’s second F1 race, Minister Abodi stated that “a rotation project is being developed behind the scenes.”

F1 CEO Domenicali, who hails from Imola, confirmed the news.

“First of all, for 2026, Imola is our top reserve circuit.”

“If, for any reason, a circuit were to withdraw or wasn’t ready (Madrid, editor’s note), we would go back to Imola with our cars and drivers.”

“From 2027 onwards, we could consider a rotation between the classic European circuits,” Domenicali added. “It is an idea we are discussing with the relevant parties.”

He therefore advised Italian officials and Imola supporters not to lose hope.

“This is not a farewell, nor an irreparable loss. I have said from the beginning that we must face reality. Those who host global events have unavoidable requirements.”

“That said, Imola is still in the game.”
