Ice-Cold Win for Russell, Fiery Podium for Kimi

George Russell wins Canadian GP for Mercedes F1 as rookie Antonelli secures first podium in Montreal after a tense, high-stakes race.

George Russell completed a hat trick at the Canadian Grand Prix, winning the race after securing pole position and setting the fastest lap. The Mercedes F1 driver clinched his first victory of the season after managing the race against Max Verstappen, and he celebrated this first win for a team other than Red Bull and McLaren in 2025.

“It’s incredible to be back on the top step of the podium. The last win was in Las Vegas, we lost the victory here before and we managed to get it today after a great pole yesterday. It’s great to see Kimi on the podium, we’re back in the fight for the win,” said Russell.

The Briton acknowledged that cooler ambient temperatures were the key, more so than track temperature: “It’s a bit cooler here, we saw it last year, our car performs better in these conditions. We’ll see how things go in the next races, but we’re going to enjoy this one.”

Russell hopes to continue this strong momentum in Austria, and especially in Great Britain: “We won at Silverstone last year so maybe it’s a good omen. We were optimistic coming here and everything worked as expected, a very good day.”

Andrea Kimi Antonelli rounded out an excellent team result, as the Italian stepped onto the podium for the first time in his very young top-category career. The British team scored a full load of 33 points, and the youngest driver on the grid was ecstatic.

“It was so stressful! I’m very happy, I got a good start, managed to take third place and stay ahead. In the final stint, I pushed too hard and destroyed the front-left tyre. I had some difficulties but I’m happy to finish on the podium,” said Antonelli.

“I got a good start, managed to get alongside him. I tried to carry as much speed as possible into the first corner, and I was able to attack heading into Turn 3 and made the overtake.”

After this first podium, is a first win in sight? The Italian is hopeful: “That’s the goal. This track was very good for us all weekend, the car was excellent and I hope to keep the same momentum in the coming races.”
