Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari in 2025 marks a bold step, driven by the dream of reviving the iconic team’s fortunes and achieving championship glory.
Speaking at the press conference in Sakhir, Lewis Hamilton stated that his move to Ferrari for 2025 was partly motivated by the “huge challenge” of restoring the red team to world championship glory.
Despite signing a new two-year contract with Mercedes last year, Hamilton shocked the F1 world on February 1 when it was announced he had triggered a termination clause and was signing with Ferrari starting in 2025.
He will have a 12th and final season at Mercedes, a team with which he has won 82 Grand Prix and six of his seven titles before joining Charles Leclerc at Ferrari.
Hamilton described the move as a “childhood dream,” with the vision of rebuilding Ferrari and leading it to its first Drivers’ Championship since Kimi Raikkonen in 2007 playing a significant role in his decision.
“Obviously, this summer, I signed and at that moment, I saw my future with Mercedes,” Hamilton shared when asked why he changed his mind.
“But an opportunity arose during the new year, and I decided to take it. It was the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make.”
“I’ve been with Mercedes for about 26 years, they’ve supported me, and we’ve had an absolutely incredible journey together.”
“We’ve made history in the sport, and that’s something I’m very proud of, and I’m very proud of what we’ve achieved.”
“But ultimately, I’m writing my story and felt this was the time to start a new chapter.”
“I think for any driver growing up, watching the history, seeing Michael Schumacher at his peak, we’re probably all sitting in our garage watching the screen come on and you see the driver in the red cockpit and you wonder what it would be like to be in that seat.”
“You go to the Italian Grand Prix, we see the sea of Ferrari fans, and you can’t help but be impressed by that.”
“It’s a team that hasn’t had much success since Michael’s era and since 2007, and I saw that as a huge challenge.”
“When I was a kid, I played video games as Michael in that car, so it’s really a dream, and I’m really excited about it.”
Hamilton also briefly discussed whether he would learn Italian before the switch.
“All these years, I haven’t been able to learn other languages, but of course, I will definitely try.”
“I remember when I was karting in Italy, I was able to understand a bit, and I hope it will come back to me quite quickly.”
“But this chapter at Mercedes isn’t finished yet, and I’m still 100% focused on doing my best with this team this year.”
“We’re trying to finish on a high, that’s the big goal for me and the team, and I have absolute confidence in everyone in the team.”
“What we’ve done so far is great, so I really hope we’ll be able to somehow close the gap with Red Bull.”
