Hamilton to Honour Senna in Brazil with Iconic F1 Drive

Emotional Tribute: Hamilton Set to Drive Senna’s McLaren

01/11/2024

Hamilton will honor Senna this weekend, taking the wheel of the legendary McLaren MP4/5B at the São Paulo Grand Prix.

Lewis Hamilton will pay tribute to his idol Ayrton Senna this weekend at the São Paulo Grand Prix in Interlagos. He will drive the McLaren MP4/5B, the Brazilian’s car from the 1990 season, after Saturday’s qualifying in front of the local crowd.

“Every time we come here, it’s a chance to do it, and I think many drivers do too. But I never thought I’d get the chance to drive Senna’s car here,” Hamilton said.

“I remember someone reached out to me, my manager mentioned it, and I jumped at the chance. When I was at McLaren, I had the chance to drive the MP4/4 at Silverstone, which was incredible.”

“Just the thought of driving this car here… I remember those races where he finally won here and held up the flag. I remember those races where he finally won here and held up the flag.”

He regrets that the news about him driving the car leaked early, as he had planned to surprise fans with a helmet in Senna’s colors: “It’ll definitely be an emotional experience, and I hope people will be there to see it. I had a helmet made, his helmet, but I don’t know if we’ll use that one.”

“I think the initial hope was for it to be a surprise – I’d have an all-white suit and his helmet, and I’d go out and do the lap, and it would just feel like it was him out there. But somehow, it got out. It’s impossible to keep things secret!”

Asked about handling a car with a clutch and gear lever, the seven-time world champion laughed: “I still heel-and-toe! No, I was really good at it when I was younger, and when I drove the MP4/4, I could do it back then.”
