Lewis Hamilton firmly defends his decision to join Ferrari, dismissing the ongoing speculation and criticism about his departure from Mercedes as he prepares for a new chapter in his racing career.
Lewis Hamilton stated that his decision to join Ferrari did not require “justification” and criticized the “speculation” surrounding his departure from Mercedes F1 next season.
The seven-time world champion shocked the sports world in February by confirming that 2024 would be his 12th and final season with Mercedes before moving to the Italian team.
Hamilton has been frequently questioned about his team switch during the early stages of the 2024 season, which saw Ferrari off to a much better start than Mercedes. Many assume the British driver was aware of the impending competitiveness and made his decision after viewing data during the offseason.
“I don’t feel like my decision needs to be justified,” Hamilton said this Thursday in Shanghai ahead of this weekend’s Chinese Grand Prix.
“I know what was right for me, and that hasn’t changed since the moment I made the decision.”
“There hasn’t been a single moment where I’ve questioned it, and I’m not swayed by others’ comments or the speculation about the reasons for my departure.”
“Even today, there are people who continue to talk and spout nonsense. And that will continue until the end of the year. And I will just have to do what I did the last time when I left McLaren for Mercedes.”
“Only you can know what’s right for you, and it’s going to be an exciting time for me.”
“I plan to race into my forties. So yes, it’s not a decision I made thinking only about the short term.”
