F1’s Hesitation on Andretti: Villeneuve’s Insight

Jacques Villeneuve questions the legitimacy behind FOM’s refusal to admit Andretti Global into F1.

Jacques Villeneuve is questioning the reason for the refusal by the FOM and teams to accept Andretti Global into F1. The Canadian is convinced that specific reasons noted in the application dossier could have deterred the governing authority.

“It depends. As fans, we would want them there. But all we can say is that the FOM had information that we didn’t have about how the team was going to be built,” recalls the 1997 world champion.

“We don’t know. We only know what we see in the media, and what we see in the media today is very dangerous because anyone with an online account can be a journalist and say anything, and suddenly, it’s true.”

“It is, therefore, very difficult to start making judgments on this basis, because we do not have all the information. But it is obvious that they are a major auto racing company, they have cars everywhere, they have a lot of money behind them.”

“Does that make them a potentially winning F1 team? No. A potential, yes, but who knows? Many people have tried and failed. I set up a team with Craig Pollock, BAR, which has now become Mercedes.”

Villeneuve believes that F1 saw concerning signs about Andretti’s structure, which may have prompted a request for more time: “It’s not easy. It’s really not easy, even with the right people on board. Obviously, they had knowledge we didn’t have, otherwise they would have been in the game.”
