F1 in Spain: Madrid Rises, Barcelona Open to Sharing

As Madrid eyes permanent F1 status, Barcelona considers alternating its Grand Prix slot to retain a place on the 2026 calendar.

The Barcelona Grand Prix could be saved by accepting Formula 1’s proposal to rotate certain key European events on an annual basis.

No announcement was made during the Catalan weekend regarding 2026 (nor the name of next year’s race, the final one under the current contract), while Madrid is widely expected to become the Spanish GP, though discussions are still ongoing.

“The best cooking is slow cooking,” said Catalan Trade Minister Miquel Samper, referring to Formula 1’s worrying silence.

“Little by little, little by little. It takes a few days, a few weeks, a few months, we’ll see.”

It has already been announced that Spa-Francorchamps will only keep its famous Grand Prix alive by not hosting F1 every year, and Barcelona is not ruling out a similar scenario.

“There are several options on the table. Two major parties are negotiating: an entire government and Formula 1.”

“There are therefore many possibilities, and that’s why things are taking time. We are weighing all the pros and cons, but you can’t even imagine the number of countries eager to host a Grand Prix. It requires a great deal of professionalism and a high level of discretion.”
