Russell Advocates Emotional Health in F1’s High Stakes

In Formula 1, mental health is now openly addressed, with drivers like George Russell emphasizing the need for psychological support to manage the pressures and ’emotional hangovers’ of the racing world.

Mental health has ceased to be a taboo topic in Formula 1 in recent years, with Romain Grosjean initially broaching the subject. This was subsequently taken up by Lewis Hamilton and many of the young drivers from the new generation.

Lando Norris, in particular, has been actively involved in this area, engaging in various off-track initiatives with different organizations.

His rival yet friend, George Russell, has highlighted the benefits of consulting a psychologist to help manage the “emotional hangovers” that F1 drivers often experience.

“As I’ve matured, I’ve realized just how crucial mental health is,” Russell said.

“I think that during my teenage years, when I was navigating some tough times myself, chasing my dream post-school with few friends or peers around, we didn’t fully understand what we were going through.”

“Then there are the emotional rollercoasters we endure in Formula 1. Even after a successful weekend, you land on Monday morning feeling an emotional hangover.”

“Finding ways to deal with emotional and mental challenges, such as seeking professional help, has been extremely important for me.”

Consulting a professional has also benefited his personal balance, both in F1 and beyond.

“Finding ways to manage this, for me, is so crucial, not only for my performance but also for my own happiness and enjoyment of life.”

“And I think we can all feel better by speaking with a professional, even if we don’t feel the need to do so. Just talking to someone can potentially lift a weight off our shoulders. For me, it gives me insights on how I can improve both personally and professionally.”

“And I really enjoy that. In the same way that I enjoy going to the gym with my trainer and staying fit, I like trying to do the same thing psychologically.”
