Théo Pourchaire Receives Death Threats, McLaren Reacts

04/06/2024

Following a collision, Théo Pourchaire has faced severe online hostility, including death threats, prompting McLaren to intervene.

Théo Pourchaire has faced death threats, prompting a response from McLaren. The French driver has encountered online hostility following a collision.

Théo Pourchaire is experiencing both the highs and lows of IndyCar racing. On the track, the Arrow McLaren driver has shown promise and recently secured his first top 10 finish. However, he became entangled with Argentine driver Agustin Canapino, an incident which led to a disturbing backlash online. Pourchaire revealed on social media that he received death threats, insults, and was subjected to abusive behavior.

“I am saddened to have received so much hatred and death threats in the last 24 hours over an incident as minor as the Detroit GP,” the French driver posted on his Twitter account, urging fans to show kindness.

“I hope people understand that we are all human and can make mistakes. But it is not acceptable to abuse people online… please, be kind to each other.”

This is not the first time that fans of Canapino have exhibited threatening behavior towards a driver. Last year, his then-teammate Callum Ilott suffered similar consequences following an on-track incident. Both McLaren and Juncos Hollinger Racing have since issued a joint statement condemning such behavior.

“The last 24 hours have unfortunately reminded our teams of the need for respect and civility in our online interactions,” the partner organizations stated.

“Social media allows us to engage with our fans around the world, but it is crucial that we interact in a respectful and safe environment. We will not tolerate any form of abuse or discrimination, and those engaging in such conduct are not welcome in our online community and will be blocked.”

“IndyCar offers thrilling action on the track and incredible fan access, but we must remember that whether behind the wheel, on the pit wall, or the screen, we are all human.”
