Hill questions Red Bull’s decision to extend Perez’s contract, leaving Damon astonished.
Sergio Perez’s two-year extension with Red Bull raises many questions.
On social media, most fans do not understand or support this decision, as the Mexican’s limitations compared to Max Verstappen become increasingly costly for the championship. The era of Red Bull’s domination, previously secured by the Dutchman, appears to be ending.
For Damon Hill, the 1996 World Champion, extending Perez’s contract was not the right choice.
“I feel sorry for Checo, but it will be like fighting with one hand tied behind their back against other teams for Red Bull,” says the British racer.
“Being three-tenths behind Max is pointless. There are so many cars that can slip into this three-tenths gap. The gaps have been getting smaller, so in terms of total points, we see that it’s decreasing for Red Bull.”
“Ferrari and McLaren have two drivers who can attack. I’m not sure the same can be said for Checo, so Red Bull is somewhat handicapped at the moment if they want to defend themselves.”
And with the gap on the track and in the standings continuing to close, Hill believes the championship is “still open this year.”
“Ferrari and McLaren both show good pace and are closing the gap on some circuits. I think if you give Red Bull the right track, it could be tough to catch them, but Max’s total domination seems to be waning, and there’s a long way to go.”
