Red Bull’s RB20: Horner’s Confidence in Progress

16/01/2024

Christian Horner is confident that Red Bull has done its utmost to develop an RB20 as good as possible. The Milton Keynes team director was asked about development goals and whether his team met them.

“I think that, as far as achieving goals is possible, yes,” he explained. “We don’t have many pre-season tests, we need to focus on many things and accomplish them, but it’s always a busy time of the year at the factory, during the planning stage for the upcoming season.”

Horner doesn’t hide the fact that this RB20 posed some challenges, but assures that Red Bull has met them as the team usually does, as they strive for excellence: “There are always challenges to meet, but if you’re not pushing the limits, you’re not trying hard enough.”

Jake Dennis recently said that Red Bull would be the team to beat, but Horner downplays these comments, reminding that the car is an evolution of the previous one and that the simulator is not the track: “Simulator drivers say it’s an evolution, not a revolution, that it’s a simulator and it’s still a virtual world.”

“The simulator drivers say it’s an evolution, not a revolution, that it’s a simulator and it’s still a virtual world. I hope we are making progress. But the stopwatch never lies and we will only see when we are on the track.”

RB20: Horner’s Cautious Optimism

Horner does not commit to the possibility of the RB20 outperforming its predecessor: “Only time will tell. The RB19 is the most efficient car in the history of Formula 1, so the RB20 has big shoes to fill.”

“But there’s always something to learn in this business. The RB19 still had elements we could improve on, and the team worked hard over the winter during the design phase to address and rectify these.”

Similarly, he does not venture to quantify the team’s gains over the winter between the two cars: “I think it’s impossible to quantify. We’ll see when we get to the circuits. It’s pointless if someone has made a leap forward and you’re three tenths behind.”

“Everything is subjective at this time of year. I’m sure everyone is looking to beat us this year, and why not? We can only focus on ourselves, the factory is very busy right now as we prepare for a big year with a record number of races.”
