Williams F1 Braces for Tough Canada GP Amid Weather Woes

06/06/2024

Williams F1 gears up for a challenging Canadian Grand Prix, facing both unpredictable weather and technical hurdles.

The team is eager to continue their momentum with another strong race in Canada, following their first points of the season in Monaco. Sven Smeets, the sporting director, outlines the objectives for the Grove-based team and the challenges they face at Montreal’s Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

“After scoring our first points in Monaco, we are very eager to return to Canada. It’s a fantastic event with a great atmosphere in the city that comes alive during the F1 week,” said the Belgian.

“The track lends itself to real racing and excellent overtaking, but the variable weather conditions can often make the weekend very difficult to manage. The track has also been completely resurfaced since our last visit, so we will all discover the level of grip on Friday during the first practice session.”

“Tire warming will be crucial, and the race pace will be more rewarding than the qualifying pace, so we will focus on a good race car for Sunday. Last year, we had a strong race and scored good points for the team, so we will try to replicate that result this weekend.”

The drivers believe they have a good chance

Alex Albon has fond memories of Canada and hopes to capitalize on the tricky conditions: “As we head to Canada this week, the team and I keep good memories of last year’s seventh place, our first points-scoring race of the season.”

“I am curious to see how the FW46 performs on this circuit, which always offers chances for beautiful races and overtaking. The weather will play a role in the opportunities that present themselves, and I hope that as a team, we can make the most of it. Montreal is one of my favorite cities, and I look forward to returning.”

Logan Sargeant also wants to capitalize on the weather, on a track he enjoys: “I’m really looking forward to participating in the Canadian Grand Prix. I hope we have a positive weekend as a team.”

“The Montreal circuit is one of the best on the calendar, with its combination of fast straights and tight turns that create good flow for the race. This event is known for its unpredictable weather conditions, which can create exciting opportunities.”
