Austin’s F1 Future in Doubt Amid Massive FIA Fine

Austin Fined Heavily, Fights for Future F1 Contract

21/10/2024

Austin faces a major penalty but remains determined to secure a new F1 contract, with two races left in Texas.

The organizers of the United States Grand Prix in Austin are determined to secure their spot on the Formula 1 calendar, despite receiving a hefty fine yesterday.

Yesterday, a track invasion occurred and was reviewed by the stewards. As it happened prematurely and without security clearance, the FIA issued a €500,000 fine.

According to the stewards, “a large group of spectators, estimated at around 200 people, in the grandstand on the pit straight, climbed a small barrier to stand just behind the debris protection barrier. They then passed under the fencing and climbed the track wall before entering the straight. This all took place while the cars were still on the track, completing their cool-down lap after the checkered flag.”

A popular celebration that still needs managing, but this hasn’t stopped Austin from believing in the future. The event at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) debuted in 2012 and has grown steadily, especially since Liberty Media took over.

Bobby Epstein, one of the masterminds and financial backers of Austin’s F1 project, revealed that the circuit was forced to spend more than $10 million to resurface the track for the 2024 edition.

“Max’s (Verstappen) harsh criticism last year might have been the last straw, but it was time to do it. The bill ran into eight figures. Let’s just say it was a big check.”

As Austin now has to compete with the glitz and glamour of Miami and Las Vegas, can the current host of the United States Grand Prix continue to look forward with confidence?

“We are quite satisfied with our position. The current contract with Liberty Media runs until the 2026 edition. We are doing everything we can to keep Austin on the Formula 1 calendar.”

“As for the new street circuits in the U.S., you have to compare our track record with their uncertain future. We’ve proven ourselves.”
