Alpine F1 Returns to Shanghai with Modest Hopes

Alpine F1’s Shanghai Ambitions: Famin on New A524 Evolution

16/04/2024

Alpine F1 sets modest goals as they return to Shanghai for the 2024 Chinese Grand Prix, facing familiar challenges.

Unsurprisingly, the objectives of the French team remain modest given their current performance level.

Bruno Famin, the team director, discusses Alpine F1’s ambitions for Shanghai and the lessons from the Japanese GP. He reveals that Enstone has worked hard to advance an evolution, however, it will only be available for one of the two A524s.

“The last race in Japan highlighted the magnitude of the challenge ahead to improve our performance level. We are not where we want to be and we must develop the car’s performance to compete for higher positions.”

“The level must be raised in all areas for us to get out of this tough moment. Even though it was good to bring our first developments to Suzuka, we need to do more. The team has worked extremely hard, and we will be able to bring an evolution to one car this weekend, which is a race earlier than expected. Next appointment is this week in Shanghai for the first Sprint weekend of the season.”

Famin discusses the challenges of F1’s return to Shanghai.

“It has been five years since Formula 1 last raced in China, which is a long time in F1, presenting unique challenges for all teams and drivers this weekend.”

“The cars are completely different from those of 2019, so the preparation has differed from usual. It’s a good track with long straights and very long corners, which have caused significant tire degradation in the past.”

“Given the Sprint format, we will have less preparation time and it will be crucial to be competitive from the first laps. Both of our drivers were at the Enstone simulator last week taking time to be ready to meet the challenge.”
