Alonso Eager to Collaborate with Adrian Newey Post-Red Bull

Fernando Alonso expresses his long-standing desire to collaborate with Adrian Newey, amidst rumors of the famed engineer’s move from Red Bull, potentially joining him at Aston Martin.

Fernando Alonso admits he has always wanted to work with Adrian Newey, the car designer who is leaving Red Bull. The Aston Martin F1 driver drove in 2007 in a McLaren that was an evolution of the MP4-20 designed by Newey (photo at the bottom of the article), but has never directly driven one of his creations.

Newey is on the market for a new team and the possibility of him joining Aston Martin, where Alonso is located, was a possibility. However, this seems to be drifting further by the hour as the engineer moves closer to Ferrari.

“I’ve always wanted to work with him once in my life. I have great respect for him. I consider him probably the best engineer F1 has ever had, a legend of the sport,” Alonso stated.

“I feel somewhat privileged to be racing alongside him in the paddock, obviously as a competitor, but I feel lucky to be part of his journey and he has also been a part of my journey because I’ve always raced against his cars.”

The two-time world champion has even had conversations with Newey, as he has regularly been in contact with Red Bull. During meetings, the engineer sometimes accompanied Christian Horner and Helmut Marko for discussions regarding a possible collaboration.

“I was close to joining Red Bull several times. I even spoke with him a few times because some of these meetings in the past were not only with Christian and Helmut but also with Adrian. I have always expressed my admiration to him, and he has always shown me respect. Let’s see what he does in the future.”

Asked about the possibility of Newey joining Aston Martin, the Spaniard refers to owner Lawrence Stroll and does not know if this option is being considered: “That’s a question for Lawrence. We are very satisfied with our technical department.”

“Adrian is the best or one of the best, but he needs to fit into a team. It’s more Lawrence’s decision than Adrian’s, ultimately, that needs to be made. We are not focused on that at the moment; there are many things we need to address with the car here in Miami.”
