Fernando Alonso and Aston Martin impressed in Montreal as F1 teams face tyre strategy, grip evolution and street circuit challenges in Canada.
Fernando Alonso looked comfortable this Friday in Montreal, finishing in the top five of Free Practice 2 at the Canadian Grand Prix. The Aston Martin F1 driver is off to a solid start as he targets another points finish this weekend.
“It’s hard to predict. Things went well for us, the car feels good, but it’s difficult to put everything together over one lap. Sometimes it’s Turn 3, sometimes it’s the final corner where you run wide. It’s tricky and it will be the same tomorrow,” Alonso said.
“We need to stay focused, we need a bit of luck, and we have to be on track at the right time. The tyres need a few laps to warm up, but once they’re in the window, there’s graining, so you only get one or two laps. It will be interesting!”
The Spaniard is not yet certain whether Friday’s performance was representative: “Free Practice 1 and 2 are the least important sessions of the weekend. We know the track keeps gaining grip because it’s a street circuit. It evolves a lot, so we’ll want to carry out some precise tests tomorrow.”
Lance Stroll revealed he is “feeling good” after his wrist surgery, but his day was cut short after he hit the wall. The impact didn’t appear severe but was enough to break the suspension of his AMR25: “I had some understeer and clipped the wall. Tomorrow will be a new day. The morning wasn’t bad, we made some changes so we’ll see how it goes tomorrow.”
