Alexander Wurz tipped as FIA presidency contender

Alexander Wurz could challenge Mohammed Ben Sulayem in December’s FIA elections as momentum builds behind his potential candidacy.

Another potential rival to Mohammed Ben Sulayem for the presidency of the FIA, the governing body of Formula 1, may soon step forward.

Former F1 driver Alex Wurz has joined Carlos Sainz Sr. on the list of those interested in the position and could run in the December elections.

Wurz Gains Ground Globally

Wurz, 51, already active within the FIA, co-director of the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association, television commentator for Austrian broadcaster ORF, and involved in a racetrack construction company, is being encouraged to run by a growing number of people.

Ben Sulayem is becoming an increasingly divisive figure in the F1 paddock and within the Paris-based federation he leads, as he oversees a troubling exodus of key FIA figures.

Alongside the father and namesake of Williams driver Carlos Sainz, another name linked to the FIA’s December presidential elections is that of former F1 team principal David Richards.

Support is growing for Le Mans winner Alexander Wurz to take the helm of the global motorsport governing body.

Wurz Backed, Sainz Hesitates

The former Benetton, McLaren, and Williams driver has already received backing from 1996 world champion Damon Hill.

“He’s an absolute expert, he has the knowledge, and he places great importance on driver safety,” the Briton reportedly said.

“Wurz as FIA President? It would be the perfect role for him.”

As for the candidacy of rally legend Sainz Sr., his son reveals that his father has yet to make a definitive decision.

“It’s interesting to note that it wasn’t his idea,” said the Williams driver.

“Many people in the paddock gradually started considering the idea, approached him, and offered him this option. He’s currently thinking it over.”

“He hasn’t yet formed a list or a team, but depending on how he sees things, he will decide whether to accept or not.”
