Hamilton Ignites F1 Silly Season, Albon Eyes Red Bull

04/02/2024

Lewis Hamilton’s move sets off the F1 Silly Season, with Alexander Albon potentially joining Max Verstappen at Red Bull in 2025.

Lewis Hamilton has sparked the Silly Season into full swing with his sensational move, even before a meter has been driven in 2024. Alexander Albon is next in line, as top journalist Peter Windsor reports that Red Bull Racing has offered the Thai driver a three-year contract starting from 2025. This would mean that Albon becomes the new teammate of Max Verstappen, with Sergio Pérez having to make way for him, even as Mercedes might also be eyeing the Williams driver.

“As I understand it, Albon has been offered a three-year contract by Red Bull to start in 2025,” said Windsor. “So, I think you will see him alongside Max Verstappen in the Red Bull.”

According to the Brit, it’s an offer that he cannot refuse. “I can’t imagine him saying no to it. As I understand, it’s not 100% but 90% correct.”

Albon was already mentioned by insiders as an ideal candidate for Mercedes to take over Hamilton’s spot, partly because of his remarkable performances at Williams and the connections both teams have due to the Mercedes power unit. Whether these rumors have sparked anything at Red Bull Racing is hard to say.

Albon’s Journey: Red Bull to Williams

Albon previously raced for the Austrian team as Max Verstappen’s teammate. Midway through 2019, he replaced the underperforming Pierre Gasly. The Thai was given further opportunity to prove himself in 2020, but the leadership was not satisfied. Red Bull opted for experience with Perez, though Albon remained as a test and reserve driver in 2021. In 2022, with a helping hand from his employer, Albon got a renewed chance at Williams which has so far paid off well.

The Williams driver said in early January that he was ready again for a seat at the top. He is grateful for the things he has learned at Williams, he told Motorsport Total: “Other drivers had difficult phases in their career, like Daniel Ricciardo at McLaren. He struggled to find a feel in the car. They tried to make it as comfortable as possible for me in the Red Bull, but it never really worked out completely. With today’s knowledge, I could do it. But that’s easy to say in hindsight.”
