At the Chinese GP, McLaren F1 excelled with Norris and Piastri finishing in the top five, exceeding expectations.
Lando Norris clocked the fourth fastest time in the qualifying session of the Chinese Grand Prix. The McLaren F1 driver does not hide his joy as the team expected to struggle in Shanghai after a disappointing Sprint.
“I’m very happy. It was close with Fernando. I couldn’t ask for much more,” admits Norris. “The Red Bull is clearly in a different league this weekend, both in qualifying and race pace.”
“Still, it was a good day. Would I have liked to be ahead of Fernando? Yes. Are there two-hundredths to find in the car? Yes. That’s the way it is, but it’s still a good position for the race.”
The British driver just wants progress on tire management: “We are getting a lot out of the car. It’s just a matter of tire degradation, managing them thermally, we are not at the level we should be.”
Oscar Piastri completes McLaren’s strong result with fifth place: “It was a decent qualifying session. I had a few tricky corners but it went well, better than this morning.”
“We’ll see what happens tomorrow but we’re starting from a good place. We have fast cars behind us but we’ll see what we can do,” notes Piastri, who has managed to make some progress with his car, at least a little.”
“With these cars, it’s simple to know what we want to do to go faster, so there aren’t many things to change to revolutionize the car, at least for us. We made a few small changes, it went better and we got the tires in a good window.”
