Max Verstappen dominated the Shanghai qualifiers, leveraging enhanced car settings and benefiting from Parc Fermé rules.

Max Verstappen had a perfect day in Shanghai with a win in the F1 Sprint and pole for tomorrow’s race. The Red Bull driver was able to fine-tune his car’s settings thanks to the Sprint, and he had even more margin in qualifying.

“After the Sprint, there were new ideas and the car works even better. I’m happy with how the qualifying went, the car was great to drive, and the last lap in Q3 was very good. I’m happy to drive in the dry here, it was fun,” said Verstappen.

“After a race, we go back to low fuel loads and it takes a lap to get comfortable. We know where we can find a bit more in the corners. And we had extra tires with the rain so we could practice a bit more. I was getting faster with each lap, the track evolution wasn’t huge but it was okay.”

Sergio Perez did the essential for Red Bull with second place, and the Mexican was very satisfied with his lap and his qualifying, despite a close elimination in Q1 with the 15th time.

“It was very intense, I almost got eliminated in Q1 because I was hindered by a Williams, I had to go back in and go out with new tires, and I just made it. Q2 was good, we made progress during the session but in the end, it wasn’t enough to catch Max. The track had changed a lot and we changed the car a lot, I hope it pays off,” notes Perez.

Perez hopes to perform at least as well in the race: “Everything is still to play for tomorrow, we can fight and we can have a good race. We showed today that we have a very good pace on long stints and I’m looking forward to tomorrow.”
