In an unexpected twist at the Japanese GP, Ferrari emerges as a strong contender, challenging rivals closely.
While FP2 offered little assistance to Ferrari at the opening day of the Japanese Grand Prix, FP1 revealed that the Scuderia still appears competitively positioned. Carlos Sainz recorded the third-fastest time, just two-tenths behind Max Verstappen and closely following Sergio Pérez.
“In FP1, we were closer to Red Bull than I anticipated, indicating positive signs of the progress we’ve made over the past five months,” Sainz stated. “However, in FP1, fuel loads are unknown, but last year we were eight-tenths off in qualifying, so being just two-tenths behind in FP1 is a solid foundation, even though they will be tough to beat.”
“It looks tight with McLaren and Mercedes. Red Bull still has an edge, but a smaller one than expected, promising a good fight. I was confident during the early races; the car felt good this morning hitting the track, which is a positive sign. The car is simply better this year.”
Charles Leclerc was slightly further back in the standings, yet the initial experience with the SF-24 on Japan’s fast track seems promising for the Monegasque driver: “We didn’t learn enough as there’s still a lot to do, we have things to try, but we’re hoping for FP3 to test pending items.”
“FP1 is challenging, the track is green, very slippery, and we had only one or two runs on soft tires. We’ve had very limited running, leaving much to learn and questions to answer before qualifying.”
“I’ll do my best; that’s the goal. But to achieve that, we need to ensure we’re as prepared as possible. For now, I think we lack the pace for pole position. Red Bull looks strong, especially Max. There’s work to be done, but if there’s a special lap to be had, I hope to be the one to deliver it.”
Leclerc is donning Jules Bianchi’s helmet colors this weekend, marking ten years since the accident that claimed his friend and godfather’s life, as a tribute: “Once you put on the helmet, you focus on what’s happening on the track. But for me, it was a special sign to wear.”
“I spoke with his family; we’re still in touch and talk because we’re the same family, we’ve always been close, and they were happy that I asked to use the helmet. I’m pleased; Jules is still with us, and we need to remember him. It’s thanks to him I’m in F1, and I hope to have a good weekend.”
