Formula 1’s Pierre Gasly now co-owns FC Versailles, making a substantial investment beyond mere symbolism.

Last year, when a series of celebrities were public faces of similar investments in the Alpine F1 team, for which Gasly races, many criticized the involvement of these celebrities (including Rory McIlroy, Anthony Joshua, etc.) as being symbolic or merely for marketing value.

This is not merely a symbolic gesture as far as Gasly is concerned, insists the president of the Versailles club, which currently competes in the third division league.

The club president, Alexandre Mulliez, told RMC Sport that Gasly bought into the club as part of a significant investment.

“He owns the club at the same level as me and Fabien (Lazare, co-shareholder). He asked us not to disclose the amounts, but it’s significant, not just 3 or 4%,” he assured.

“One of the main topics is to make the club shine. To accelerate development by creating a documentary series, we are convincing a platform to buy the program. And we thought it would be good to partner with a celebrity. We made a list of about twenty people including athletes, actors, musicians… Pierre was at the top of the list because I’m a fan of F1 and wanted someone who could also accompany us on performance topics. Charles Leclerc’s brother put us in touch, we met two months ago and within ten minutes, we knew we were going to partner.”

“We met not necessarily for that but he’s a football fan. He invests in companies and wanted to bring his sports expertise, his notoriety to grow a club. He was looking for a long-term project, not to associate with a club that will grow and be sold. I hope to be here forever. We share the same values, the same principles. So he thought it could be nice.”
