Piastri Critiques Comfort of Modern F1 Cars

Oscar Piastri is not content with the comfort level of current Formula 1 cars. The McLaren F1 driver believes that older cars offered a more pleasant driving experience and warns that the new ones could ultimately prove to be detrimental.

“I didn’t have much experience with the previous generation of cars,” Piastri stated. “But it was definitely more comfortable to drive, just a bit more forgiving. I honestly think that, compared to a Formula 2 car, it was quite similar.”

Piastri acknowledges the advancements in comfort made since the introduction of the current regulations, particularly with the technical directives implemented for 2023. However, he advises caution.

“I drove the 2022 car earlier this year, and we’ve made progress in terms of comfort improvement. So, the car isn’t as bad as when this regulation first came into effect, but it’s not as comfortable as the older cars.”

“I believe this is a valid point for us. At the end of the day, we’re going to drive the fastest car. You’re never going to lose lap time for having aches after the race.”

“There need to be rules to prevent us from doing that, because we’re so competitive that we’ll just achieve the best possible lap time, no matter the cost. We’ve done a good job in this area, but it’s something that we need to keep an eye on moving forward.”
