Oliver Bearman’s recent success and “Driver of the Day” accolade fuel speculation about a permanent F1 seat with Haas.
While Oliver Bearman was scoring points and earning the title of “Driver of the Day” on Saturday, rumors began to swirl about his full-time future in Formula 1. It has been known since last year that Ayao Komatsu, the new director of Haas F1, holds the British driver in high regard.
This year, Bearman is already Haas’s official reserve and is slated to take the wheel of the VF-24 six times during FP1 sessions this season. Coupled with his impressive debut in Jeddah, a full-time seat for 2025 appears likely.
A few days ago, Haas team boss Ayao Komatsu criticized Kevin Magnussen’s qualifying lag behind Nico Hülkenberg in Bahrain as “unacceptable.”
“The first assumption is usually the simplest, and that’s that he will drive for Haas next year,” stated Jan Lammers, a former F1 driver and current director of the Dutch GP, to NOS. “Haas also needs a driver like him. Their headquarters being in Maranello is no coincidence.”
Another former F1 driver, Ralf Schumacher, expressed relief that Bearman has demonstrated young drivers can make the leap to F1, hoping that teams will be less hesitant about bringing in newcomers.
“It was very important for someone like him to be thrown into the deep end. Almost all teams were almost afraid to commit to new drivers. I hope this will allow for new drivers to enter again. I see him in Formula 1 next year,” Schumacher noted.
Former driver Jason Watt acknowledges that Bearman’s performance spells bad news for Magnussen: “As I see it, one of the current Haas drivers will not be offered an extension for 2025,” the Dane told Ekstra Bladet.
