Amidst Q2’s dramatic turns, Haas F1 witnessed Hülkenberg’s unexpected halt and Magnussen’s resilient performance, setting a complex stage for the Saudi GP.
Haas F1 Team drivers, Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hülkenberg, qualified 13th and 15th respectively for the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.
Both drivers made it through Q1, but Q2 proved disastrous for Hülkenberg as a fuel supply system issue on the German’s car forced him to park his VF-24 at turn 8, triggering a red flag and prematurely ending his session.
“The cut-off was sudden, and over the radio, the team informed me it was a fuel system issue – the fuel wasn’t reaching the engine – which is obviously a concern, and they instructed me to stop. Yesterday’s running went well, not great, but we did a good job with the setup overnight for the race. However, we can’t really test that until tomorrow, obviously. I think it’s going to be a challenge either way, especially starting amidst traffic and the pack. It’ll be an interesting day for us to see how the package performs here on a track that’s quite different from Bahrain.”
As the action resumed post-red flag, Magnussen returned to the track to secure the 13th fastest time in Q2.
“It went better than expected, I’d say. The cold temperatures didn’t seem to favor us, so we had to do a preparation lap instead of just an out lap before pushing. It appears we were more affected by the cold temperatures, which is a different situation from what we’re accustomed to, usually it’s the opposite. Starting 13th tomorrow is a decent position; we’re close to the points and I believe we can compete for them.”
