F1: Horner Faces Scrutiny Over Inappropriate Exchanges

02/03/2024

Amidst the start of the F1 season, Red Bull Racing’s Christian Horner confronts allegations of inappropriate interactions.

Christian Horner, the director of Red Bull Racing, was invited to a meeting yesterday with the CEO of Formula 1 and the president of the FIA.

He thus met Stefano Domenicali and Mohammed Ben Sulayem, who, like 147 other individuals from the paddock and the media, received screenshots, photos, and videos showcasing his inappropriate interactions with a Red Bull Racing employee, presumably his personal assistant. These items have not been authenticated but have already spread widely on social media, with many considering them legitimate.

Toto Wolff and Zak Brown had called on Formula 1 and the FIA to take action as early as Thursday, even before this leak surfaced.

What will the FIA do in response? It could utilize the International Sporting Code to sideline anyone damaging the sport’s image. However, Ben Sulayem still urges caution at this time in the Financial Times columns.

“It would be a mistake for the FIA to rush into action and act alone, but the FIA would examine any complaint coming from our compliance officer.”

“It harms the sport,” he admits. “It’s damaging on a human level.”

“It’s the start of the season. Formula 1 is becoming so popular. We should just enjoy the start of the season. Look at the competition on track. Why are we overshadowing all this with negativity?”

Toto Wolff has called for the same approach on his end.

“They need to think about what they now do with this information. But we want to focus on the racing now. We’ve been talking about this issue non-stop for weeks.”

On his part, Christian Horner is understandably not much questioned in the paddock, including about on-track events, as the discomfort is palpable.

“Obviously, it’s a difficult period,” says Horner to the Dutch TV channel NOS. “Obviously, there’s a lot of noise, but I’m fully focused on my job here in Bahrain and on my family.”
