Bearman’s Camp Eyes Exit Clause Amid Ferrari Contract Talks

October 23, 2026

Oliver Bearman is expected to remain with Haas for the 2027 Formula 1 season, but the absence of an official announcement reportedly has little to do with uncertainty over his future at the American team.

Instead, negotiations involving Ferrari have emerged as the main obstacle, with the British driver’s representatives seeking greater flexibility beyond next season.

As Bearman sets his sights on competing regularly for podium finishes, his management is understood to be exploring contractual provisions that would allow him to pursue opportunities elsewhere if a seat at Ferrari fails to materialise. The discussions have reportedly created tensions behind the scenes.

Haas Future Appears Secure Despite Contract Delays

Haas recently confirmed a significant change to its 2027 driver line-up, announcing Esteban Ocon’s departure at the end of the season and the arrival of Brazilian Formula 2 championship leader Rafael Câmara.

However, there has been no official confirmation regarding Bearman, despite widespread expectations that he will retain his seat. Neither Haas nor Ferrari, which has supported the British driver’s career, has announced the terms of his participation in the 2027 championship.

The delay does not appear to reflect any disagreement between Haas and Bearman over continuing their partnership. Instead, discussions are reportedly centred on his contractual relationship with Ferrari and the opportunities that could become available beyond 2027.

Speaking in the Austin paddock on Thursday ahead of the United States Grand Prix, Bearman confirmed that both sides remain committed to working together, although he acknowledged that certain contractual matters are outside his direct control.

“We’re really certain that we want to continue working together, and the only things that are still holding it up are somewhat out of my control. They’re more contractual matters.”

“I leave that to my management team and, of course, Ferrari as well.”

His comments suggest that another season with Haas remains the most likely outcome, although the longer-term direction of his career has become an increasingly important consideration.

Ferrari’s Driver Situation Complicates Bearman’s Ambitions

The situation at Ferrari is understood to be central to the ongoing negotiations.

Charles Leclerc remains tied to the Scuderia through a long-term contract, while Lewis Hamilton has demonstrated improved performance this season.

The seven-time world champion also continues to represent a major commercial asset for Ferrari, further complicating the possibility of a vacancy emerging in the immediate future.

Under those circumstances, it is currently difficult to see how Bearman could secure a race seat with the Italian team as early as 2028.

That uncertainty reportedly explains why his representatives are paying particular attention to the terms of any future agreement.

One possibility being considered is an exit clause that would allow Bearman to explore opportunities with other teams if Ferrari cannot offer him a seat or establish a clear pathway into its works operation.

According to converging reports from within the paddock, the issue has become a source of tension in the negotiations.

The objective would be to allow Bearman to continue developing at Haas without becoming contractually restricted should an opportunity arise with another leading Formula 1 team.

Bearman Targets a Top-Four Team and Regular Podiums

Bearman has made clear that his ambitions now extend beyond simply maintaining his position on the Formula 1 grid.

Although the British driver remains happy at Haas and sees the American outfit as his preferred destination among midfield teams, he believes his progress has reached a point where competing closer to the front is a realistic career objective.

“I’m happy to be in Formula 1, but of course, when I look at the medium and long term, I also feel that I’m ready to fight for podiums and compete at the front.”

“Among the midfield teams, Haas is the one I want to be with and the one I see my future with. But at some point, I also feel that I’ve earned the opportunity to look towards a top-four team. And of course, given my links with Ferrari, that would be my ultimate goal.”

For Bearman, the immediate priority remains continuing his Formula 1 career with Haas, while ensuring that his contractual commitments do not prevent him from pursuing a competitive opportunity elsewhere if a route into Ferrari remains unavailable.
