Hungaroring Revamp Secures F1 Future in Hungary

24/01/2024

Hungary is revitalizing its iconic Hungaroring circuit, a cornerstone of Formula 1 racing for nearly four decades. This extensive overhaul promises to rejuvenate the track and fortify its position on the F1 calendar.

Hungary is fulfilling its promise to modernize the nearly 40-year-old Hungaroring Formula 1 circuit to secure Hungary’s spot on the calendar.

At the beginning of last year, as the existing contract was set to expire in 2027, the track’s boss, Zsolt Gyulay, acknowledged that the circuit’s facilities “no longer met the requirements of Formula 1.”

He committed to upgrading the garages, expanding the paddock, renovating the pit building, constructing a new main grandstand and a new race control building, and much more. This led to successful renewal negotiations with F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali.

Hungaroring’s Major Overhaul Extends F1 Legacy to 2032

The new contract now runs until 2032, with Hungarian media even suggesting the deal includes options to remain behind the former Iron Curtain beyond that date.

“Seeing the promoter’s commitment to developing the facilities and further enhancing the fan experience is another significant step and something we want to see all our events do,” said Domenicali.

Gyulay added, “Given the astonishing increase in F1’s global popularity, which now sees more circuits than ever competing to join the calendar, this extension until 2032 marks an extremely important achievement for us.”

In line with the new agreement, the first phase of the Hungaroring renovations is currently underway during the off-season – involving a lot of demolition and excavation as construction work in the stands and paddock begins.

“The circuit’s redevelopment is in full swing,” confirmed the Hungaroring, posting a drone video online (viewable below) of the extent of the work. The entire project is expected to be completed by 2026.
