Tsunoda’s third-place qualifying marks a breakthrough, boosting RB F1’s ambitions to close the gap on Haas in Brazil.

Yuki Tsunoda delivered the finest qualifying performance of his career, securing third place in the Sao Paulo Grand Prix qualifying session. The RB F1 driver had a close call with a near track exit just minutes earlier but managed to recover well, while Liam Lawson put the second VCARB 01 in fifth.

“It was very challenging, but I enjoyed it. We had good pace; I made a few mistakes but got a bit lucky. Still, we did a very good job as a team, Liam as well, so it’s positive,” the Japanese driver reflected.

“This track is one of the toughest. When you start feeling a bit more confident, you push harder, and mistakes happen. We saw it with many cars, and I made a big mistake myself. Thankfully, I avoided the barriers.”

With both Haas cars knocked out in Q1, RB F1 has a strong chance to reclaim sixth place in the championship standings. “I feel much better than yesterday, the car has improved, and we’re in a good position. We’re close to Haas’s sixth place, so we’re aiming to catch them, maximise this opportunity, and score as many points as possible.”
