Red Bull battles circuit bumps, with Verstappen and Pérez voicing frustrations over lack of pace and challenging track conditions.
Max Verstappen clocked the fourth-fastest time in the F1 Sprint Qualifying for the São Paulo Grand Prix. The Dutch driver expressed his dissatisfaction with the circuit’s resurfacing work, facing challenging rebounds throughout the session.
“From the start of Sprint Qualifying, it felt as though we were definitely off the pace, and the car struggled somewhat over the bumps,” Verstappen remarked, pointing to the resurfacing efforts at Interlagos.
“They’ve redone the surface, but I think it’s actually made the track even more challenging to drive. It’s extremely bumpy everywhere, which doesn’t suit our car. In every bumpy section, the car jumps a lot, costing me quite a bit of time, unfortunately. For tomorrow, I’m unsure.”
“Usually, as we’re already behind in one-lap pace, I don’t think we’ll be particularly strong in the race, so we’ll have to see how it plays out in tomorrow’s Sprint. I know there’s perhaps a bit of time to gain around the lap, but maybe not for the Sprint. We’ll see how it goes.”
Sergio Pérez, who recorded the 13th-fastest time in Sprint Qualifying, voiced his disappointment over a drop in performance during SQ2. While he referenced the conditions – likely alluding to the cooler temperatures – he struggled to explain his continued lack of pace.
“We had a good SQ1, but in SQ2, I was dealing with more balance issues, with understeer. We tried to adjust the brake balance, but I was limited, and things were a bit confused with the programme,” Pérez admitted.
“I hoped for a chance at a second lap, but it didn’t happen. We were fairly strong in Free Practice, but it’s been a tough day. I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s qualifying – we got caught out by the conditions today, and it was challenging.”
