Colapinto’s F1 Future Williams Pushing for 2025 Deal

Williams Strives to Secure F1 Seat for Colapinto by 2025

01/11/2024

Williams F1 works to land Colapinto a 2025 seat, with ongoing, discreet negotiations shaping the young talent’s future in Formula 1.

Franco Colapinto is the sensation of this season’s end and could well be the final key to the driver market.

Possibly pursued by Audi F1, perhaps even by Red Bull, Williams Team Principal James Vowles today addressed various rumours during a press conference in São Paulo.

He confirmed that efforts are underway to secure a Formula 1 future for the Argentine as early as 2025.

“The best I can tell you is that we’re actively working with interested teams to find the right arrangement that supports Franco, protects Franco, and safeguards all parties involved.”

“It’s never straightforward between Formula 1 teams; you’re competing on track while also trying to shape the career of a young driver.”

“We’re exploring possibilities with several interested teams at the moment, and beyond that, it would be speculative to say more here. There’s really nothing further to communicate at this stage.”

“When there is, I’ll gladly share, because he’s an exceptional driver, and I genuinely believe that. Look outside – there are tens of thousands of people here supporting a driver who has been in our championship for only five races.”

“He’s doing remarkable work on track, and as I’ve said from the start, earn your place, and the opportunities will come. But beyond that, particularly given he’s just 21, I feel a responsibility to him to ensure we’re doing what’s right. I also want to be sure that when we have real news, we make it known to the world, but until then, we need to shield him from excess speculation.”

Vowles declined to confirm whether options such as a driver loan or contract sale to another team were being considered.

“It’s the same conversation I just mentioned. In any case, I want to ensure we understand what interests others, and from there, we’ll set our foundation to determine the best solution for everyone.”

“He’s earning his place. He has more to do to continue securing his position given current events, but he’s shining, and that’s why teams are interested in him and in Williams. I have a responsibility to him as well as to Williams, and I hope we’ll have positive news to share with everyone, but that’s not possible today.”

Christian Horner was seen in Williams’ hospitality today. Could this be a sign that talks are progressing?

“Oh no, we just signed a new coffee partner, and he came by to give it a taste,” Vowles quipped with a smile.

Vowles is optimistic that a decision on Colapinto’s prospects will be reached before the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi at the beginning of December.

“These things are always difficult as multiple teams are involved in discussions. But I’m confident we’ll get this sorted before the last race of the season, though it’s really challenging to pinpoint the exact moment between now and then.”
