Russell: F1 Drivers United on Track Limits Boundaries

01/11/2024

George Russell affirms F1 drivers agree on track boundaries, expecting Verstappen will adjust to avoid future penalties.

George Russell explains that track limits remain a major point of debate between the drivers and the FIA, and this hasn’t been fully resolved simply by the stricter approach of the stewards in Mexico.

According to him, discussions are moving in the right direction.

“We had the discussion last week in Mexico. Most of the drivers were aligned on what needs to change. The FIA wanted consistency.”

“But most of us think that if something is wrong, changes should be made and implemented immediately. Looking at Mexico, penalties were handed out, they were the right penalties, and perhaps they should have happened in Austin as well.”

“Everyone is more or less aligned on where the boundaries lie.”

While Verstappen has said he wouldn’t handle these situations differently, Russell believes he’ll adapt regardless.

“He’s a triple world champion; he knows what he’s doing, there’s no doubt about that. And he’s a fierce competitor, he’s always been aggressive, and I think that’s great.”

“If you go over the limit, you’re penalised. If you’re on the limit, you achieve something big. And last week, he crossed the line, and he was penalised. There have been times when he was on the edge, and he didn’t go over.”

“So he knows what he’s doing, and I think last week’s penalties were correct; he can’t dispute that.”

“He’ll adapt because it’s clearly not in his interest to keep receiving penalties.”
