Leclerc sees Ferrari’s Sprint weekend strategy as pivotal to edging out McLaren in a close São Paulo showdown.
Charles Leclerc believes McLaren F1 will be the team to beat at the São Paulo Grand Prix, though he feels Ferrari is close enough that the Sprint weekend format could allow them to fight for victory.
Ferrari has won each of the last two races, with Leclerc claiming victory at the Circuit of the Americas before Carlos Sainz’s win in Mexico last weekend.
Leclerc doesn’t expect Interlagos to suit Ferrari as well as some of their rivals, but he asserts that the performance differences are so marginal that they could benefit from the tight timing imposed by a Sprint format.
“On paper, Qatar is probably the toughest weekend remaining for us. Here, it’s maybe the second in terms of not expecting to be particularly strong. I think Las Vegas should be a very good weekend for us, and Abu Dhabi will likely be neutral.”
“We really need to focus step-by-step. These are very specific details, and sometimes they can make a big difference, especially in a Sprint weekend like this one.”
“We only have a single free practice session. If we manage to perform well in that session, anything is possible. The margins aren’t large enough to be clear-cut. If we do a good job, then we’ll have a chance to win this race. Even though, on paper, I don’t think we’re the favourites, and McLaren will probably be the team to beat.”
Leclerc also sees potential in the fact that Interlagos features a new track surface this year, leaving teams little time to adapt to changes compared to previous years.
“The free practice session is going to be extremely important. As I’ve said, I think it’s going to play a big role in this weekend’s outcome. The team that adapts the quickest, the one that best anticipates this new surface, will have the advantage, and I hope we can be the best at that.”
