Red Bull Exit Unlikely Perez Holds Firm Contract Edge

Perez Safe? Manager Insists on ‘Watertight Contract

31/10/2024

Sergio Perez’s future remains uncertain, but his manager claims Red Bull cannot easily terminate their “watertight” contract.

Damon Hill asserts that Sergio Perez’s team believes they have a “watertight contract” with Red Bull as pressure around his seat mounts.

Perez’s future has never seemed so uncertain, and despite a contract for next year, serious questions remain over whether the Mexican driver will still be in his seat at the first race of the season.

Another disappointing performance, this time at his home race in Mexico, has put Perez back in the sights of Dr. Marko and, more pointedly, Christian Horner.

However, Hill, after speaking with Perez’s manager Julian Jakobi, says the driver won’t be ousted.

“I had a discussion with his manager at the last race I attended, and I think they’re very confident they have a watertight contract.”

“The question is, what’s happened to Checo? Why is he so far off the pace? I don’t understand.”

“I don’t understand what he’s doing, what’s going on in his head or in the garage; I just don’t know.”

“Contracts are one thing, but sooner or later, there comes a time when they have to do what they have to do.”

Hill expressed his sympathy for Perez, stating that drivers can sometimes suffer mentally in these scenarios when issues keep piling up.

“It’s very tough. It’s very difficult mentally. I’ve experienced it myself.”

“It’s a very particular situation when you can’t find what you’re looking for, and it’s also very challenging if you’re in a team where the focus isn’t necessarily on solving your issue. They have bigger fish to fry. So it escalates, and I sympathize with Checo.”

As for who might replace him, Hill remarked that being Max Verstappen’s teammate is tough and questioned if Liam Lawson is ready to step up.

“I’m sure they’d like someone who could support Max. Max won’t want a driver who’s going to cause him trouble. So you have to balance these things.”

“Yuki [Tsunoda] must be wondering why he’s not getting the seat. The fact is, Liam came back from his forced break as if he’d never left, showing what he can do very quickly.”

“He’s already made some enemies, and one of them, Sergio, is the person he could replace. As for team morale, the Red Bull family has seen better days!”
