Carlos Sainz secures a crucial win, boosting Ferrari’s hopes for a final push in the Constructors’ Championship battle.
Carlos Sainz triumphed at the Mexican Grand Prix, delivering a commanding performance from the front. Although initially overtaken by Max Verstappen at the start, Sainz regained the lead on the second lap and maintained his position all the way to the finish. This victory, following his pole position the previous day, capped off an impressive weekend for the Ferrari driver.
“Thank you, Mexico! It’s incredible to see such a crowd. I felt the support throughout the weekend and thoroughly enjoyed it. I really wanted this win, I needed it for myself, and I was determined to achieve it. I wanted another victory before leaving Ferrari, and to do it in front of this audience is unbelievable. Now, there are four races left, and I want to make the most of them,” Sainz said.
The Spanish driver impressed with a skilful manoeuvre against Verstappen to reclaim the lead, noting that he was determined not to let his rival hold the advantage for long. Despite being at a clear deficit heading into the first corner, Sainz attacked decisively, securing the lead and holding onto it for the rest of the race.
“I wasn’t prepared for it; I was frustrated to have lost a place at the start, and I knew I had to catch him off guard somehow because Max is very difficult to overtake. I was quite far back, but I thought I had nothing to lose and made a move on the inside. I had great confidence in my braking at Turn 1 this weekend, and I took advantage of that.”
Charles Leclerc finished third after a challenging end to the race, yet he managed to set the fastest lap, contributing 34 points to Ferrari. The Scuderia is now well-positioned to challenge McLaren for the Constructors’ Championship.
“It was a tough race. The first stint was all about managing temperatures, which was difficult. We delivered the best race we could; I was on the back foot all weekend and couldn’t do better. Carlos drove an incredible race, and it’s been a great weekend for the team,” Leclerc remarked.
“We’re working very hard with the entire team. Over the last few races, we’ve returned to the level where we should be, and it’s amazing to see. The Constructors’ Championship remains our goal, and with weekends like this, we’re getting closer. We’re going to push hard to secure this crucial title.”
