Carlos Sainz dominates the Mexican Grand Prix as penalties derail Verstappen’s race, while Norris capitalises to secure a crucial second place.
Carlos Sainz leads Ferrari to another one-two finish this Sunday at the Hermanos Rodriguez circuit, host of the Mexican Grand Prix.
Ferrari’s momentum seems unstoppable as the 2024 F1 season draws to a close. After dominating the Texan race last week, the Scuderia celebrated another victory this Sunday in Mexico, making significant strides in the constructors’ championship.
Starting from pole position, Carlos Sainz claimed his second win of the year, taking victory in the Mexican Grand Prix. The Spanish driver faced little challenge on his way to the chequered flag, crossing the finish line with a five-second lead over Lando Norris’s McLaren.
Charles Leclerc, who held second place for much of the race, completed the podium after being overtaken by Norris with just seven laps to go. The Monegasque driver consoled himself with the point for the fastest lap. The Mercedes duo of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell finished respectably, both securing top-five positions.
Verstappen Heavily Penalised
Starting from the front row, Max Verstappen could only manage a sixth-place finish, losing valuable points to Norris today. The reigning world champion received two separate ten-second penalties for twice forcing his main title rival, Norris, off the track early in the race. The FIA stewards adopted a strict stance in their rulings today.
Haas enjoyed a solid team performance, scoring eight points in Mexico with Kevin Magnussen in seventh place and Nico Hülkenberg in ninth. Oscar Piastri, in eighth, and Pierre Gasly, in tenth, rounded out the top ten of this Mexican Grand Prix.
The next round of the 2024 F1 calendar will take place as soon as next weekend at the Interlagos circuit in Brazil, featuring another sprint weekend.
