Alonso’s Q3 hopes were dashed by a red flag, while Stroll questioned the feasibility of reaching the top 10.
Fernando Alonso could only manage 13th place in the Mexican GP qualifying session. The Aston Martin F1 driver lamented the red flag triggered by Yuki Tsunoda, which halted a promising lap, and he believes that a top 10 spot on the grid was within reach.
“We faced performance issues for most of the weekend, but during qualifying, the car was far more competitive than in free practice, and I was much happier,” Alonso commented.
“We opted to use three sets of tyres in Q1, and it worked out. I was on a strong lap in Q2 just before the red flag ended the session, and I think we could have made it into Q3 if I’d been able to complete the lap.”
The Spaniard downplayed his struggles and still cherished the milestone he was achieving this weekend: “I’m not expecting miracles in the race, but I’m ready to fight and enjoy my 400th Grand Prix. As a child, I dreamed of becoming a Formula 1 driver, and here I am with more than two decades in this sport, so I feel extremely fortunate.”
Lance Stroll will join him on the seventh row of the starting grid and is trying not to be too frustrated by the red flag that ended his session: “I was on my final lap when the red flag came out, but I think Q3 would have been a tough ask regardless.”
“Getting into Q2 was the target here in Mexico, so we can take some satisfaction from that. However, we are certainly not where we want to be, and there’s a lot of work ahead to improve the car’s performance.”
