Five rookies, including Ferrari’s Bearman, hit the track Friday, promising an exciting start to Mexico’s Grand Prix weekend.
This 20th round of the 2024 F1 season, held at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodríguez for the Mexican Grand Prix, will feature a slightly special Friday.
As one of the three remaining rounds without a sprint format, teams are seizing the opportunity to field rookie drivers.
Half of the teams will have rookies in FP1.
Pato O’Ward will take the wheel of the McLaren MCL38 in front of his home crowd. Oliver Bearman and Kimi Antonelli, confirmed as F1 drivers for 2025, will participate in Free Practice 1 with Ferrari and Mercedes, respectively.
Felipe Drugovich, the 2022 F2 champion, will drive the Aston Martin in place of Fernando Alonso, while Robert Shwartzman will replace Guanyu Zhou at Stake.
The rookies will have 60 minutes to gain more F1 experience, followed by FP2, where regular drivers will all be on track for 90 minutes (instead of 60), with 30 minutes dedicated to testing the 2025 Pirelli tires.
