Michael Andretti steps down from his racing team’s helm, putting the much-anticipated F1 project on pause.
Michael Andretti has relinquished control of his racing empire, Andretti Global.
Renowned for his involvement and achievements in predominantly U.S.-based series, including IndyCar, Andretti sought entry into Formula 1 in early 2022, simultaneously ramping up operations and preparations.
Earlier this year, despite approval from the FIA, Formula 1, owned by Liberty Media, rejected the Andretti-backed Cadillac bid—a decision that ultimately led to a U.S. government investigation into potential anti-competitive practices.
In this context, it is intriguing that Andretti Global has now announced that co-owner Dan Towriss has assumed full control of the company.
“Michael’s goal has been to shift to a more strategic role with Andretti Global and to focus less on the operational side of the racing team,” the team confirmed in a statement.
“Michael remains committed and will continue to serve as a strategic advisor and key ambassador.”
While nothing should change for Andretti Global on the U.S. front, on the F1 side, it’s likely the end of the project, as Towriss does not wish to continue sinking millions of dollars into preparations without assurance of entry.
The end of the F1 project has not been officially enacted but seems to logically follow from this change in ownership. Towriss is expected to comment on his strategy in the coming days.
